Meet Sharon Bumgarner Precinct Committe Person for Forest Hills Precinct

Sharon Bumgarner
I was born and raised in the East Texas oil field living in Tyler and Kilgore. During my senior year in high school, my mother and I moved to Norman, Oklahoma so I would have access to a four year college. My accent is a little Texas and Oklahoma mixture.
I first got involved in Democratic politics while attending the University of Oklahoma where I met my husband Robert, who is now deceased. He was a member of a large pioneer Oklahoma family (and cousin to James Garner, the movie star) that had always been heavily involved in Democratic politics as his father had been a County Commissioner and Election Board Secretary. Naturally I got involved in party politics working for various candidates, serving as President of the Cleveland County Democratic Women's Club, etc. Robert was also Party Chairman for a while for Cleveland County.
A very close friend of ours, Lee Cate, was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives and later to the Senate. During his 20 plus years of service, he asked me to be the Secretary of the Election Board for our county. When I took office in 1975, Cleveland County was the third largest county in Oklahoma out of 77 counties. We were still voting on paper ballots. I computerized the voter registration system. Later, I instituted electronic voting similar to what Maricopa county has today.
In 1989, Maricopa County was looking for a new Elections Director. I applied and got the job, but after the General Election of 1990, Jim Shumway lost the election for Secretary of State. Helen Purcell, County Recorder, replaced me with him. I had to make a career change and start over. From the University of Oklahoma, I had a BBA in Family Finance so I decided to become a financial planner. I worked for the old IDS Company which is now Ameriprise, and in 1995, I went to work for Charles Schwab & Company working in various areas as a trader, trainer and the last five years in the Sun City/Arrowhead office as a Vice President - Financial Consultant. I retired October 2007.
I have three grown children and six grandchildren. My son, Sean, and his wife Nancy were in Sydney, Australia but are returning to Houston, TX soon. My son, Shane, and his wife, Kelly, and three children live in Charlotte, NC. My daughter, Kara, and her husband, Patrick, are moving back to Phoenix from Shaker Heights, OH as she has accepted a job as a school psychologist in the Paradise Valley School system. In addition to my volunteer work, I am taking a class in Conversational Spanish for seniors at PVCC and have attended some ballroom dance lessons. Last year, I took Scuba diving, but decided it was not for me. It is nice to be able to explore some new experiences.

Democratic Candidates at Anthem Celebration

July 3 Event Featured District 6 Candidates Jack Doody, Teri Conrad and Jim Larson.

Three Candidates

District 6 Democrats and the North Maricopa Democratic Club co-hosted the annual Independence Day celebration July 3 in Anthem. This is the 5th year we have had space at the event and was by far our most successful.

All of our District 6 candidates participated as well as those from District 4. Also attending were Bob Lord, Dan Saban and Sandra Kennedy. Many visitors stopped by our booth and took literature and giveaway items from our candidates. We also found new volunteers and registered voters.

Thanks to all who helped and a special thank you to Pat Henson for planning the event and purchasing the flags and canopy.

District 6 Candidates Make Progress

Three Have Made it to Ballot and One Has Received Clean Elections Funding

The State Legislature candidates for District 6 - Jim Larson (State Senate), Jack Doody and Teri Conrad (State House) - have qualified for the September 2nd Primary Election Ballot. They each gathered double the signatures needed and turned them in to the Arizona Secretary of State well before the June 4th deadline. They have no opposition in the primaries so they will go on to the November 4th General Election.

Jim Larson will be running against GOP Incumbent Senator Pamela Gorman for the second time. Jim received 42% of the vote in 2006 and is hoping for more support from Independents & Republicans this year.

On the House side, Jack Doody and Teri Conrad will face off in the General Election against the winners of the GOP State House Primary. Freshman incumbent Doug Clark decided not to run again so three Republican candidates will compete against one another in the Republican primary for the right to contest the two House seats in the General Election.  The three Republican primary candidates are freshman incumbent Sam Crump, a recent California immigrant who now lives in Anthem, Carl Seel, a salesman and conservative newspaper publisher who finished fourth out of four in the 2006 Republican State House Primary, and Tony Bouie, a plastic cup manufacturer, former college & professional football player, and Anthem resident who changed his voter registration from Democrat to Republican shortly before entering the Republican primary.

Jack Doody qualified for Clean Elections funding on July 8th. He gathered 264 $5 Contributions from registered D6 voters - well above the 220 needed to qualify. Jack's campaign has already received $12,921 for the Primary and will receive an additional $19,382 for the General Election.  Jim Larson & Teri Conrad are still gathering $5 Contributions for their campaigns. Each needs about 75-100 more contributions before the August 21st deadline. All three Democratic candidates report that 15-20% of their respective $5 Contributions have been donated by Republicans. Jim is getting 25% of his Clean Election Seed Money contributions from Republicans as well.
