Council on Aging - Legislative Update Budget Concerns Take Top Priority
Despite budget concerns taking top priority this week, little action is being take at the legislature; bills are not moving forward.
As requested by the Governor's Office of Strategic Planning and Budgeting, state agencies conducted 2010 budget reduction exercises outlining the impact of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% reductions. Some have posted the information at their websites. At the end of day 75 of the 2009 Arizona Legislative Session, the count remains the same - 1,099 bills posted, one (1) bill signed, and 94 memorials and resolutions posted. April 10th marks the last day by leadership order for House committees to consider Senate bills and Senate committees to hear House bills.
Visit the Council's web page for the list of bills the Council is tracking.

PC Profile Teri Conrad - Dead Man Wash Precinct
Recently, we were asked to provide a biography about our owner. Since we have lived with the Conrads almost all of our lives, we are quite qualified to supply the prop er information. Our names are Ebony and Sable and we are five-year-old Labrador sisters. Like our owners, we love long walks in the desert or the mountains, and appreciate the quiet life in Desert Hills.
When she is not scratching behind our ears, our owner, Teri Conrad works at the Desert Broom Branch of the Phoenix Public Library. She has worked in academic and public libraries, taught school, had her own consulting business, and ran for the Arizona Legislature in 2008. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada in Political Science and a Masters degree from the University of Utah in History.
Teri and her husband, Byron (an engineer with APS), raised three boys. The oldest has finished school and works as an actuary in Portland. The younger two are students at NAU. One is planning a career in the medical field and the other wants to study physics. The boys played soccer and ran track. Education, sports, Scouts, and church activities were the focus of our family's life as the boys were growing up.
Now that the boys are gone, our owner spends more of her time on political and community activities. In her church, she has served as an elder and chaired the Social Justice and Peacemaking Committee for the Grand Canyon Presbytery (covering Phoenix and northern Arizona). She is also chairman of the North Maricopa Democratic Club.
She is planning to run again in 2010. Again, her focus will be on education, particularly math and science education. She often says, "As a teacher and a parent, I have observed that training in math and science leads to enhanced employment opportunities for young people. Their contributions, in turn, benefit their communities, their country, and the world. In order to achieve sustainable growth, Arizona must cultivate on this valuable resource."
Teri Conrad is a PC in Dead Man Wash. We (Ebony and Sable) are hoping to join her as she walks and meets Democrats in the precinct. Our favorite part is playing in the water in the wash!
